<!–texy–>I've also had Ubuntu 9.04, but by default only libstdc++6 is available which does not solve the problem. I needed to add

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu hardy partner
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy universe

to /etc/apt/sources.list

and then as this article says

$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install libstdc++5

worked fine.

I even have both libstdc++6 (installed first) and libstdc++5 (installed later) co-existing in the system.
